Bike Rodeo safety event set for May 7

Along with the warmer springtime weather comes an increase in the number of children with bikes out and about within the community. To make sure that local youth are well educated on proper road etiquette and bicycle safety, the Vinton Parks & Recreation Department will be hosting its annual 'Bike Safety Rodeo' on Tuesday, May 7th at the Vinton Recreation Center parking lot.

Garden Extravaganza set for May 11 in Belle Plaine

  Come celebrate spring at the 9th annual Benton County ISU Extension Master Gardeners “Garden Extravaganza” Saturday, May 11, at First Lutheran Church, Belle Plaine. The church is located at 1523 Sunset Drive, two blocks north of Dollar General. Activities start at 8-9 am with registration plus the always popular plant and garden art sale.

Honor Flight fund-raiser set for May 4, in Iowa City

Pressure Canner Testing Dates

Pressure canners with a dial-type pressure gauge should be tested each year for accuracy. Rachel Wall, ISU Extension Nutrition and Health Specialist, will be offering testing of dial gauge pressure canners. La Porte City Street Scenes Movie at Hawkins Memorial Library

A one-hour collection of La Porte City streetscenes from the 1930’s, 1940’s, and 1950’s, will be shown at Hawkins Memorial Library, La PorteCity, on Monday, May 29, at 1:15 PM,. These “snippets” of past life in La PorteCity, with appearances by many local people, were captured on the 8 mm movie camera of George Abel.

Ruth Anne Schneck knitting her experiences together May 1st

On Wednesday, May 1, at 6 PM, Ruth Anne Schneck will share her knitting experiences at Hawkins Memorial Library, La Porte City, with a program and a tulip coaster knitting class. Then on Wednesday, May 8, at 6 PM, she will present a second class teaching participants a kite coaster pattern from her knitting book.    Ruth Anne’s book The Little Garden of Knitted Coasters takes you merrily through the seasons of the year, making knitted coasters for your coffee table or desk.

Kirkwood Summer Camps Offer Fun, Career Exploration

KICK Campers try to solve a crime in the Crime Scene Investigators Camp In its first five years, Kirkwood Interactive Camps for Kids (KICK) has seen more than 3,200 camper registrations, and it’s expected to have more than 1,000 this summer. Although registrations are filling fast, there are still many opportunities for youth to enroll KICK Camps, which has offerings running from June 10-August 9. For the sixth straight year, Kirkwood is offering its wide range of active, engaging learning choices for area youth.

Spring Tree Workshop Being Offered

  During the winter, the City of Vinton offered tree workshops for those property owners interested in replanting trees in their right-of-ways. We heard from many of you who were away at the time and unable to participate. Therefore, the City will be offering a tree workshop7:00 PM on Thursday, May 2, 2013 at Vinton City Hall, 110 West 3rd Street.
